Chief Hosa

Description: Chief Hosa is a good winter running location. It's mostly on a smooth, dirt road with a moderate grade. There's little traffic. The road is well maintained, through the winter, up to the chain. The upper ~1 mi, above the chain (closed to traffic in the winter), may be covered in snow. Road shoes are fine for most of the route.

Route: The route is fairly easy to follow. There are just two key junctions to pay attention to.

Start to the right of the "Y" and head up the hill. Follow the blue line. About 2/3 mi up, stay right at the 3-way junction. If you're new to this route, please pay attention to this junction for the way back. The road varies between fairly flat and a moderate climb. About 2mi up, the dirt road meets a paved road. Remember this for the way back. Go left on the paved road and continue another ¼ mi to the chain. Those going short short should turn around here. Medium and longer runners continue to the top. We try to make it to the flagpole at the top. In the winter, be prepared to do a bit of post-holing to the top.

Return to the start the same way. Remember to turn right, back onto the dirt road, ~¼ down from the chain. At the 3-way junction, short and medium runners should stay left. Please pay attention. It's easy to end up going right if you don't.

Those going long, often go right at the 3-way junction. Follow the red line down the fairly steep hill. At the bottom, just before I-70, follow the road to the left. It climbs up a bit, then is flat and gradually downhill back to the cars.
